On April 21st, 2021, the Battleground Golf Course celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting an anniversary tournament. The invited guests each took turns speaking on how significant the golf course is to the development of the City of Deer Park’s history. Former Mayor Jimmy Burke, Former Mayor Wayne Riddle, City Council Member Sherry Garrison, and ultimately Mayor Jerry Mouton were among the invited guests who spoke during the event. In honor of the occasion, the golf course will be running a number of promotions throughout the year at the Republic Grill, the Clubhouse Pro Shop, and even out on the course itself.

The Battle of San Jacinto took place on April 21, 1836, not far from where Deer Park, Texas, is located today. It is possible that the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution took place on land that is today known as The Battleground at Deer Park in remembrance of the Texans’ fight against Santa Anna’s Mexican Army. This combat took place in Texas. General Samuel Houston led the Texan Army. One hundred sixty years to the day, on April 21, 1996, an 18-hole golf course opened with a homage to the combat that lasted just 18 minutes. It was only natural that an 18-hole golf course open with a nod to the conflict.

In order to preserve the historical significance of the course, golfers will make two trips across the Pruitt Truss Bridge during the course of their round. Simeon Henry West established the city of Deer Park in 1892, and at the same time, the Pratt Truss Bridge was built in Cornell County in order to across the Leon River. It is the only surviving bridge built in Texas by the Clinton Bridge and Iron Company of Iowa, and 104 years after its initial construction, it was transferred to be a signature feature of The Battleground at Deer Park on opening day. In addition, it is the only bridge built in Texas during the Civil War.
